La sobreexposición al sol causa quemaduras. Los rayos ultravioleta del sol pueden producir una quemadura dolorosa que puede convertirse en una quemadura de primer o segundo grado. El reflejo del agua, la arena o la nieve puede intensificar los rayos solares. La mejor protección es la prevención. Se debe evitar la exposición al sol durante las horas pico de los rayos solares y aplicar crema protectora con un factor de protección solar (SPF) de al menos 15. Se debe proteger los ojos con lentes que tengan protección UV y usar ungüento para los labios con protector solar. La exposición al sol durante años, sin protección, puede causar envejecimiento prematuro y cáncer de la piel.
