La sangre se extrae rutinariamente de un recién nacido para examinarla. La sangre se obtiene por “punción en el talón” y se recoge en un papel secante especial. Las pruebas de rutina usualmente abarcan: fenilcetonuria, función tiroidea, hemoglobina S (enfermedad drepanocítica) y se pueden evaluar otros trastornos. Los programas de tamizaje en recién nacidos varían de un estado a otro. Los exámenes se pueden adaptar a la población local, determinando las pruebas de rutina que se deban hacer.
