La ictericia del recién nacido (coloración amarilla de la piel) puede originarse por muchas causas, pero la mayoría de los bebés que la sufren tienen una condición llamada ictericia fisiológica, un fenómeno común en el neonato que se presenta como consecuencia de la inmadurez del hígado. Este tipo de ictericia es de corta duración, pues dura sólo pocos días. La ictericia que persiste por más de tres o cuatro días, o que empeora con rapidez, debe ser evaluada por un médico hasta que los niveles de bilirrubina en sangre disminuyan o se normalicen.
