En esta microfotografía aparece el ácaro responsable de la sarna, junto con sus huevos y heces. Los ácaros excavan túneles dentro de la piel, en donde depositan sus huevos y heces. La infestación por sarna produce un prurito intenso que induce al rascado y produce lesiones en la piel (excoriaciones). Sin tratamiento, la enfermedad puede perdurar por muchos años, razón por la cual ha sido llamada "prurito de los siete años".
