El goteo o la congestión nasal pueden ser ocasionados por resfriados, alergias, infecciones de los senos paranasales o por la gripe. Cuando se presenta un exceso de secreciones mucosas, la nariz se llena de líquido; las secreciones adicionales drenan desde la parte frontal de la nariz o abajo de la parte posterior (goteo posnasal). La sensación de tener congestión nasal ocurre cuando las membranas que recubren la nariz se hinchan a causa de la inflamación de los vasos sanguíneos.
