Las garrapatas son criaturas pequeñas, similares a insectos que viven en los bosques y en los campos. Estos animales se pueden adherir a las personas o animales a medida que ellos rozan arbustos, plantas y pastos. Las garrapatas pueden ser bastante grandes, tanto como el borrador de un lápiz o tan pequeñas que es casi imposible verlas. Aunque la mayoría de las garrapatas no portan enfermedades, algunas pueden causar la enfermedad de Lyme, la fiebre manchada de las Montañas Rocosas, la fiebre por garrapata del Colorado y la tularemia.
