Los órganos del sistema nervioso central (cerebro y médula espinal ) están cubiertos por tes capas de tejido conectivo llamadas meninges, las cuales están conformadas por la pia madre (la más cercana a las
estructuras del SNC), la duramadre y la aracnoides (las más alejadas del SNC). Las meninges protegen los vasos sanguíneos y contienen líquido cefalorraquídeo. éstas son las estructuras involucradas en la meningitis, o inflamación de las meninges, que de tornarse severa puede convertirse en encefalitis, una inflamación del cerebro.
