El ántrax cutáneo es una infección de la piel causada por la bacteria
Bacillus anthracis
. La bacteria produce la enfermedad cuando entra en contacto con una piel que no está intacta. Durante la infección, se forma una lesión de piel inicial que luego se ampolla. La ampolla se convierte en una úlcera negra y los ganglios linfáticos se pueden infectar y causar dolor. A menudo se forma una costra que se seca y se cae en dos semanas. En el 20% de las personas no tratadas, la infección puede esparcirse al torrente sanguíneo y tornarse fatal. Sin embargo, si se administra el tratamiento adecuado, es poco frecuente que se produzca la muerte.
