Es importante comprender la distribución de los nervios en los dermatomas para determinar de qué manera algunas enfermedades como el zoster y otras condiciones neurológicas afectan un área del cuerpo. La combinación de números y letras muestran la relación entre cada área y el nervio sensorial correspondiente. Las vértebras se clasifican de la siguiente forma: C para cervicales, T para torácicas, C para lumbares y S para sacras. El nervio trigémino es el quinto nervio craneal, representado por la letra V.
