Cuando los ovarios producen exceso de andrógeno, un tipo de hormonas como la testosterona, la mujer puede manifestar características masculinas. Este trastorno ovárico puede ser causado por tumores de los ovarios o de las glándulas suprarrenales, o por tener ovarios poliquísticos. Algunas de las manifestaciones de la virilización son: excesivo vello corporal y facial, amenorrea o ausencia del período menstrual y cambios en la forma del cuerpo.
