La hernia inguinal es el resultado de la protrusión de un órgano, por lo general el intestino grueso, a través de un punto débil o rasgadura de la delgada pared muscular del abdomen. Las hernias inguinales pueden provocar una restricción del abastecimiento de sangre hacia el intestino herniado a través de dicho defecto y, como consecuencia, causar una emergencia médica.
