Hepatomegalia - Información general

Hepatoesplenomegalia; Agrandamiento del hígado; Hígado agrandado

Definición:

Es la inflamación del hígado más allá de su tamaño normal.

Si tanto el hígado como el bazo están agrandados, esto se denomina hepatoesplenomegalia.

Consideraciones generales:

El borde inferior del hígado normalmente llega hasta el borde inferior de las costillas (margen costal) sobre el lado derecho. En su estado normal, el borde del hígado es delgado y firme y no puede sentirse con las puntas de los dedos por debajo del borde de las costillas. Se puede considerar que está agrandado si el médico lo puede sentir en esta área.

Causas comunes:

El hígado está involucrado en muchas funciones corporales y es afectado por una variedad de padecimientos, muchos de los cuales producen hepatomegalia.
