Definición:

Las encías inflamadas son las encías agrandadas, prominentes o que protruyen de manera anormal.

Consideraciones generales:

La inflamación de las encías es bastante frecuente y puede involucrar a uno o más espacios de forma triangular de la encía entre los dientes adyacentes. Estas secciones se denominan papilas.

En ocasiones, las encías se inflaman de forma considerable, bloqueando el diente por completo.

Causas comunes:

  • Gingivitis
  • Infección por un virus u hongo
  • Desnutrición
  • Prótesis dentales mal ajustadas
  • Embarazo
  • Sensibilidad a la pasta dental o al enjuague bucal
  • Escorbuto
  • Efecto secundario de una droga como en el caso de Dilantin o fenobarbital
