Efectos secundarios:

El consumo de grandes cantidades de fibra en un corto período de tiempo puede producir gases intestinales (flatulencia), distensión y cólicos abdominales, los cuales generalmente desaparecen una vez que las bacterias naturales del aparato digestivo se acostumbran al aumento de la fibra en la dieta. Los problemas con el gas o la diarrea se pueden reducir agregando la fibra en forma gradual a la dieta y no toda de una vez.

Demasiada fibra puede interferir con la absorción de minerales como el hierro, el zinc, el magnesio y el calcio; sin embargo, este efecto no causa demasiada preocupación debido a que los alimentos ricos en fibra generalmente son ricos en minerales.
