Es importante mantener un equilibrio de electrolitos en el cuerpo, debido a que ellos afectan la cantidad de agua corporal, la acidez de la sangre (pH), la acción de los músculos y otros procesos importantes. Uno pierde electrolitos cuando suda y debe reemplazarlos tomando líquidos.

Los electrolitos están presentes en la sangre como ácidos, bases y sales (como sodio, calcio, potasio, cloro, magnesio y bicarbonato) y se pueden medir por medio de estudios de la sangre en el laboratorio.
