Tratamiento:

Los antibióticos pueden prevenir las complicaciones a largo plazo si se usan al comienzo de la infección y pueden abarcar eritromicina y doxiciclina. En ciertos casos, puede ser necesaria la cirugía del párpado para prevenir la cicatrización crónica que, si no se corrige, puede conducir a ceguera.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

El tratamiento oportuno antes del desarrollo de cicatrización y deformidades de los párpados tiene un excelente pronóstico.

Complicaciones:

  • Cicatrización de la conjuntiva y la córnea
  • Deformaciones de los párpados
  • Pestañas invertidas
  • Pérdida visual: si es severa puede ocasionar ceguera

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe acudir al médico si la persona o el niño ha estado recientemente en un área del mundo en donde el tracoma es común y se presentan síntomas de conjuntivitis.
