Infarto de la hipófisis - Información general

Apoplejía hipofisaria

Definición:

Es la muerte de un área tisular en la hipófisis, una pequeña glándula unida al hipotálamo (parte del cerebro) que produce muchas de las hormonas que controlan los procesos esenciales del organismo.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El infarto de la hipófisis es causado más comúnmente por un sangrado debido a un tumor no canceroso de la hipófisis. Cuando este sangrado se presenta en una mujer durante o inmediatamente después del parto, se denomina síndrome de Sheehan.

Entre los factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de un infarto de la hipófisis están:

  • Trastornos hemorrágicos
  • Diabetes
  • Traumatismo craneal
  • Radiación a la hipófisis
  • Uso de un respirador

Sin embargo, en la mayoría de los casos, la causa no es clara.
