Definición:

Los sialolitos o cálculos en los conductos salivales son minerales cristalizados en los conductos que drenan las glándulas salivales. Dichos sialolitos son un tipo de trastorno de las glándulas salivales.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Durante la alimentación, las glándulas salivales en la boca producen la saliva. Las sustancias químicas en la saliva pueden cristalizarse y formar un cálculo o sialolito que puede obstruir los conductos salivales. Cuando la saliva no puede salir porque el conducto está bloqueado, se regresa a la glándula causando dolor y una inflamación de la misma. Las glándulas submandibulares, en la parte posterior de la boca en ambos lados de la mandíbula, resultan afectadas con mucha frecuencia por los sialolitos.
