Parálisis facial; Parálisis facial periférica idiopática

Definición:

Es una forma temporal de parálisis facial que se presenta con daño al nervio que controla el movimiento de los músculos en la cara.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La parálisis de Bell es una forma de mononeuropatía del VII par craneal y es el tipo más común de daño a este nervio. Este tipo de parálisis afecta a 2 de cada 10.000 personas.

La parálisis de Bell implica daño al séptimo par craneal (facial), el nervio que controla el movimiento de los músculos de la cara. La causa a menudo no es clara, aunque las infecciones por herpes pueden estar implicadas.

Se presume además que esta parálisis está relacionada con hinchazón (inflamación) del nervio en el área donde atraviesa los huesos del cráneo. Otras afecciones relacionadas con la parálisis de Bell abarcan:
