Es una hinchazón (inflamación) muy dolorosa del nervio (trigémino) que da la sensibilidad a la cara y a la "superficie" del ojo.
Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La neuralgia del trigémino causa dolor facial intenso y de corta duración (sólo unos cuantos segundos) en el lado del nervio afectado y es un padecimiento que generalmente afecta a los adultos mayores.
Con frecuencia, no se puede encontrar una causa; sin embargo, hay áreas de inflamación del cerebro o vasos sanguíneos anormales (malformaciones arteriovenosas) que lo pueden causar.
Los ataques dolorosos por la neuralgia del trigémino se pueden presentar después de tocar ligeramente diferentes áreas de la cara que se encuentran a lo largo del V par craneal.
