Definición:

Es la incapacidad para descomponer el glucógeno, una fuente importante de energía que se almacena en el tejido muscular.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El síndrome de McArdle resulta de un defecto en un gen que fabrica una proteína llamada glucógeno fosforilasa. Como resultado, el cuerpo no puede descomponer el glucógeno en los músculos, lo que puede llevar a que se presente debilidad, calambres y dolores musculares.

La enfermedad es un trastorno genético autosómico recesivo, lo que significa que una persona afectada hereda una copia del gen defectuoso de ambos padres. La persona que hereda un gen defectuoso de sólo uno de los padres generalmente no desarrolla el síndrome.

Los antecedentes familiares del síndrome de McArdle incrementan el riesgo.
