Glucagonoma - Información general

Definición:

Es un tumor de las células de los islotes pancreáticos que secretan las hormonas insulina y glucagón.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El glucagonoma es por lo general maligno (canceroso). El cáncer tiende a diseminarse y empeorar. Este cáncer afecta las células de los islotes pancreáticos y, como resultado, éstas producen demasiada cantidad de una hormona llamada glucagón.

El exceso de glucagón ocasiona síntomas como intolerancia a la glucosa e hiperglucemia (azúcar elevado en la sangre). La propagación del cáncer (metástasis) al hígado se puede presentar. El glucagonoma también causa una lesión cutánea característica, denominada eritema migratorio necrolítico.

Se desconoce la causa, pero los factores genéticos juegan un papel importante en algunos casos. Entre los factores de riesgo se pueden mencionar antecedentes familiares de neoplasia endocrina múltiple tipo I (NEM I).
