Empiema - Información general

Definición:

Es una acumulación de pus en la cavidad que se encuentra entre el pulmón y la membrana que lo rodea (espacio pleural).

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El empiema es causado por una infección que se disemina desde el pulmón y que lleva a una acumulación de pus en el espacio pleural. El líquido infectado se puede acumular hasta una cantidad de una pinta (470cc) o más, ejerciendo una presión en los pulmones que causa dolor y dificultad para respirar.

Los factores de riesgo son, entre otros: enfermedades pulmonares recientes que incluyen neumonía bacteriana, absceso pulmonar, cirugía torácica, traumatismo o lesión del tórax o, rara vez, introducción de una aguja a través de la pared torácica para drenar el líquido del espacio pleural ( toracocentesis).
