Introduction:

Fluconazole (floo-KON-a-zole)

Prevents and treats certain fungus infections. Belongs to a class of drugs called antifungals.

Diflucan IV, Amerinet Choice Fluconazole

There may be other brand names for this medicine.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not receive this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to fluconazole or to other antifungals. Do not use this medicine if you are using terfenadine (Seldane®) or cisapride (Propulsid®).

How to Use This Medicine:

Injectable

  • Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given through a needle placed in one of your veins.
  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using cyclosporine (Neoral®, Sandimmune®), phenytoin (Dilantin®), rifampin (Rifadin®), or a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin®). Tell your doctor if you are using cisapride (Propulsid®), Hismanal®, terfenadine (Seldane®), theophylline, or birth control pills. Make sure your doctor knows if you are using Mycobutin®, Prograf®, Versed®, or a diabetes medicine such as tolbutamide, glyburide, or glipizide.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have liver disease or kidney disease. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, or problems with your heart.
  • Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using this medicine. Be sure to keep all appointments.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
  • Blistering, peeling, red skin rash.
  • Dark-colored urine or pale stools.
  • Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps.
  • Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in your upper stomach.
  • Pain, itching, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed.
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet.
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness.
  • Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Diarrhea.
  • Headache or dizziness.
  • Mild nausea or stomach pain.
