Aminocaproic acid (Injection)

Introduction:

Aminocaproic Acid (a-mee-noe-ka-PROE-ik AS-id)

Treats a condition that causes you to bleed too much. Used to control bleeding after surgery, or to slow down bleeding during surgery in people who have bleeding problems.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to aminocaproic acid. In some cases, you should not use this medicine if you have a blood clotting problem called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

How to Use This Medicine:

Injectable

  • Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given through a needle placed in one of your veins.
  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using a medicine to treat hemophilia such as Factor IX (Proplex® T, BeneFIX®), or activated prothrombin complex concentrate (FEIBA®, Autoplex® T).

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have hemophilia, anemia, or other problems with your blood. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, liver disease, or kidney disease. This medicine contains benzyl alcohol (as a preservative) and should not be given to a baby.
  • Your doctor will need to check your blood at regular visits while you are using this medicine. Be sure to keep all appointments.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
  • Blood in your urine.
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood.
  • Confusion, weakness, and muscle twitching.
  • Decrease in how much or how often you urinate.
  • Slow or uneven heartbeat.
  • Redness, pain, or swelling where the IV is given.
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising.

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Blurry vision, watery eyes, or stuffy nose.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Dizziness or headache.
  • Mild muscle pain, weakness, or fatigue.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet.
