Introduction:

Acetic Acid (a-SEE-tik AS-id)

Prevents bladder infections caused by bacteria from an indwelling urinary catheter. An indwelling urinary catheter is a thin rubber tube that is placed and left in your bladder to drain urine out of your body. Also helps prevent calcium from clogging the catheter.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine should not be given by injection or used for irrigation during transurethral surgical procedures.

How to Use This Medicine:

Liquid

  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. This medicine is given through your urinary catheter.
  • This medicine does not have preservatives. Use the irrigation as soon as possible after opening the container and throw away any liquid that you do not use.

How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze.
  • Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
  • Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

  • Rapid breathing, trouble breathing, or nausea and vomiting.

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Sores or irritation of your skin around the catheter.
